Requests for Applications (RFAs)

The office plays a leadership role in developing ideas for initiatives and in gaining the support for them within the NIH Institutes. Although the OBSSR does not have grant-making authority, it has been active in organizing and, more recently, in funding (through transfers to the NIH Institutes) trans-NIH and trans-agency Requests for Applications (RFAs) and Program Announcements (PAs).

An NIH Request for Application:

  • Identifies a more narrowly defined area for which one or more NIH institutes have set aside funds for awarding grants
  • Usually has a single receipt (received on or before) date specified in the RFA announcement
  • Usually reviewed by a Scientific Review Group convened by the issuing awarding component

To date, the OBSSR has organized the following RFAs:

Fiscal Year 2007       RFA on Mind-Body Interactions and Health
