Leap into the Community Technical Assistance Workshop
February 29, 2008 |
|
On February 29, 2008, the Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research (OBSSR) organized the first-ever community-based participatory research (CBPR) technical assistance workshop convened on the National Institutes of Health (NIH) campus. This workshop featured program officials from various NIH institutes who are also members of the NIH Community-Based Participatory Research Scientific Interest Group (CBPR SIG). Additionally, a branch director from the Health Services Resources Administration (HRSA) and two pairs of established, federally funded CBPR partners presented at the workshop.
The purpose of this event was to provide comprehensive instruction on the CBPR approach as well as applying to community-based participatory research Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOAs) at the NIH, especially three OBSSR-initiated FOAs released in January 2008: PA-08-074 (R01), PAR-08-075 (R01), and PAR-08-076 (R21).
In recognition of limited resources and operating budgets that often exist within communities, community-based organizations and universities, the entire full-day workshop was videocast and permanently recorded for the benefit of all seeking guidance on community-based participatory research at the NIH. The goal being to disseminate information as widely as possible to CBPR practitioners, communities and otherwise interested parties. Live audience attendees represented 9 states and were joined by hundreds of virtual participants from across the country on February 29. Thousands of viewers have since accessed the archived recordings which are available to the general public free of charge as follows:
