Assignment to be Completed Prior to
the 2007 NIH Summer Institute:
 

Following notification of acceptance to the 2007 NIH Summer Institute Program, you must prepare 2-3 specific aims for your proposed project with attention to community partnership, including how you expect ideas to be elicited from community stakeholders.  In addition, list five justifications for the significance of the project, both in practical terms (from the perspective of community stakeholders) and scientific terms (perspective of the scientific community; literature-based). The completed assignment should be submitted by all awardees via E-mail by July 2, 2007 to hkim@thehillgroup.com.

Assignment for July 10, 2007: Prepare detailed description of the nature of your community partnership and its 2-3 specific aims. Include a careful and detailed explanation of how ideas will be elicited from community stakeholders. Also, prepare an updated statement of the significance of your project, both from your own perspective as a scientist and the perspective of community partners. Prepare a plan of action that includes both faculty investigators and community partners.


SESSION TWO: TUESDAY, JULY 10, 2007

Work on Assignment with Supports from Methods Consultants

Assignment for Presentation:  List the central constructs that guide your proposed project and how you propose that they relate to one another. If possible, model these relationships graphically.  Develop a table that describes the variables that you will use to measure the central constructs that you will be using.  If your study is quantitative, cite references that demonstrate the reliability and validity of your chosen measures.

3:15 to 5:00 p.m. Presentation and Critique: Participants will share their specific aims, plan for eliciting specific aims, research questions, and ideas from community partners, conceptual framework, and measures in small groups. The groups will convene to share progress and provide feedback.
5:30 to 7:00 p.m. Reception: Opportunity for networking between participants, faculty members, and NIH staff. Site TBA.

3:15 to 5:00 p.m. Presentation and Critique: Participants will share their sampling frame and recruitment strategy in small groups, carefully tying them to their specific aims and central research questions(s).  They will then outline their designs and methods of data collection. Assignment for July 13, 2007: Prepare 5-10 Power Point slides of your proposal and submit them electronically by 8:00 p.m.  In addition, two to three volunteers will revise their entire proposals and submit them by E-mail by the same deadline.
