NIH OBSSR Postdoctoral Fellowships

Are you a doctoral-level researcher passionate about the intersection of behavioral science, data, and public health? The NIH Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences (OBSSR) is accepting applications for two Oak Ridge Institute for Sciences and Education (ORISE) postdoctoral fellowships for researchers interested in advancing the role of behavioral and social sciences in federal health research.

The first of the two fellowships—titled NIH OBSSR Fellowship for Using Behavioral and Social Sciences Research to Inform AI Practices in Health Research Policy and Administration—focuses on the intersection of behavioral science and artificial intelligence. The selected fellow will examine how behavioral and social sciences (BSSR) can inform the application of AI in health research, policy, and administration by engaging in landscape reviews, conceptual framework development, and collaboration with federal and external partners. The fellow will conduct guided research collaboratively with OBSSR staff, including leadership. This position is based in Bethesda, MD, with in-person or hybrid arrangements available.

The second fellowship—titled NIH OBSSR Fellowship for Program Impact Analyses—focuses on program impact analysis, applying data science methods, including bibliometric analysis, network analysis, and NIH grant data analysis, to evaluate outcomes of NIH-funded behavioral and social sciences training and career development programs. Guided by experienced mentors, the selected fellow will explore ways to deepen expertise while broadening knowledge into additional areas to develop a well-rounded, interdisciplinary skill set. This position is fully in-person at the NIH Main Campus in Bethesda, MD.

Both fellowships offer a monthly stipend, a potential health insurance supplement, and appointments renewable annually for up to five years. Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in a relevant discipline received within the last five years or be nearing completion. The initial application deadline is July 1, 2026. Later applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis after.
