BSSR Festival Panel 3: Adoption of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research Findings into Research and Practice

The NIH Behavioral and Social Sciences Research Festival on December 2, 2016, at Natcher Conference Center will be highlighting behavioral and social science research and exploring new directions for research through panel discussions.

The third panel at the NIH BSSR Festival will be highlighting the adoption of BSSR findings into research and practice. This panel will be moderated by Gila Neta, Ph.D., from the National Cancer Institute (NCI). Dr. Neta is an epidemiologist and program officer for the Implementation Science Team in the Office of the Director within the Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences at the National Cancer Institute. Her programmatic and research interests within implementation science include training, portfolio analysis, the use of PRECIS criteria in evaluating pragmatic trials, shared decision making and cancer screening, de-implementation, and the use of standardized measurement and evaluation.

We’ve brought together researchers from different research backgrounds and disciplines to highlight efforts across different health areas, settings, and types of interventions to integrate them within clinical and community practice.

Sarah Gehlert, Ph.D., is the E. Desmond Lee Professor of Racial and Ethnic Diversity at the Brown School and in the Department of Surgery of the School of Medicine. Dr. Gehlert’s publications focus on social influences on health, especially the health of vulnerable populations. She will be presenting on her work published in Cancer Prevention Research titled, “Toward a Modern Science of Obesity at Washington University: How We Do It and What Is the Payoff?” This work was funded by NCI (U54CA153460).

Alan L. Mendelsohn, M.D., is a developmental-behavioral pediatrician who is associate professor of pediatrics and population health at New York University School of Medicine and Bellevue Hospital Center. Dr. Mendelsohn's research has focused on poverty-related disparities in critical child outcomes including child development, obesity, and chronic disease. He will be presenting on his work published in Archives of Pediatric & Adolescent Medicine titled, “Addressing Disparities in School Readiness Through Promotion of Parenting in Well-Child Care: The Broader Context of Let's Read.” This work was funded by the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (R01HD047740).

Marty G Woldorff, Ph.D.., is a professor at Duke University with appointments in the Departments of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience, and Neurobiology, and with a laboratory based at the Duke Center for Cognitive Neuroscience. Dr. Woldorff's main research interests have been in advancing our understanding of the neural mechanisms of attention. He will be presenting on his work funded by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (R01NS051048), investigating the interactive relationship between attention and reward, including discussing some of the potential translational applications of such research.

Lynn M. Grattan, Ph.D., is an associate professor of Neurology at the University of Maryland Medical Center. She will be speaking on her work funded by National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (U19ES020683) on resilience and mental health outcomes. She published an article in the Journal of Behavioral Health Services Research titled, “The Resilience Activation Framework: A Conceptual Model of How Access to Social Resources Promotes Adaptation and Rapid Recovery in Post-Disaster Settings.”

Across these presentations, we will learn about different strategies to implement a variety of interventions and variations in approaches to this research.

The goal of this research festival is to build our understanding and capacity to implement transformative behavioral and systemic interventions that lead to sustainable improvements in health and well-being. We look forward to seeing you there! Register Today!
