Overview

The OBSSR and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Adherence Research Network hosted a series of workshops titled “An Action Agenda: Promoting the Science and Practice of Health Behavior Maintenance.” The goal of these workshops was to develop a deeper understanding of health behavior maintenance to better promote and sustain positive health outcomes. These workshops built on previous efforts by the OBSSR and the NIH Health Maintenance Consortium to identify the processes, components, and contextual factors that influence health behavior maintenance.

Workshop 4: Behavior Maintenance Approaches in Clinical and Community Settings explored real-world strategies for maintaining healthy behaviors among people with chronic conditions. It highlighted successful multi-level approaches used in clinical and community settings and addressed opportunities and challenges for advancing these practices.

In the first session, participants heard from people with chronic conditions about their experiences maintaining healthy behaviors, along with clinicians who shared the multi-level approaches and resources that have supported their patients' success. This was followed by a discussion on the similarities and differences in effective behavior maintenance strategies across chronic conditions and contexts.

The second session featured speakers who presented examples of successful programs implemented in real-world clinical and community settings, with a discussion about the opportunities and challenges associated with their advancement. The workshop concluded with a high-level overview of discussions from all the workshops in the series.
